Thriller

What does the word ‘thriller’ mean?

Every film that has been made will have been classed into a genre, mainly so the audience can pick the film they want depending on whether they wish to view a romantic comedy, sci-fi, thriller etc. Although thriller is a genre it is normal classed with another film genre such as an action/adventure thriller, romantic thriller, sci-fi thriller or even a western thriller. Thrillers often take place wholly or partly in exotic settings such as foreign cities, deserts, polar regions, or high seas. All thrillers have the plot of trying to intensify excitement, have you on the edge of your seat with anticipation, leave you in nerve- wrecking suspense and ultimatly to expect the unexpected. If the genre is to be defined strictly, a genuine thriller is a film that rentlessly pursues a single-minded goal - to provide thrills and keep the audience cliff-hanging at the 'edge of their seats' as the plot builds towards a climax. The tension usually arises when the main character is placed in a menacing situation or mystery, or an escape or dangerous mission from which escape seems impossible.

According to www.IMBD.com these are the best thriller films ever made:

The Godfather (1972)
The Godfather: Part II (1974)
Rear Window (1954)
No Country for Old Men (2007)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
The Usual Suspects (1995)
Psycho (1960)
North by Northwest (1959)
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Fight Club (1999)
